Identified as James Vine Barret (1822-1868) by Pickering & Chatto Antiquarian Booksellers (with no sources of information given).
Grandson of George Barret Senior and son of George Barret Junior, both important landscape painters, the second among the founders of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours (see obituary in Gentleman's Magazine (October 1842), 437).
Brother of Charles Percy Barret (1819-1857?) and Catherine Barret, of whom nothing is known except she was the youngest.
Both James and Charles exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843, James with Sunset (cat. no. 998) and Twilight (cat. no. 1237), and Charles with Afternoon Sun (cat. no. 1006). Charles also exhibited in 1844, with two drawings with similar subject, Sunset (cat. no. 636) and Twilight (cat. no. 957) (Exhibition of the Royal Academy (1843), 39; (1844), 38; Christopher Wood, Christopher Newall, Margaret Richardson, Victorian Painters: Text (Woodbridge: Antique Collectors' Club, 2008), 40).
