ADVERTISEMENTS
Academy (December 13, 1879), 424: "Messrs. Ward, Lock and Co. have liberally sent us their Royal nursery picture book, and also the same pictures divided in two sets, under the title of "Aunt Fanny's toy books" and "The Warwick House toy books." The style of illustration is of the old-fashioned and somewhat vulgar type, which we fondly hoped had been driven out by the new school of Walter Crane, Caldecott, and Kate Greenaway. The contrast is more striking since the artist has followed the subjects, and in some cases almost the designs, which Caldecott has immortalised for the fortunate children of the present generation. To this much of necessary criticism we may add that the best, and at the same time the most original, of the series are "The little traveller's alphabet" and "The little shopkeeper's alphabet;" but we could wish that the label of letterpress ran below and not above each picture."
